Statement

Impressionism was the first major “shock” of modernism. Many painters working on the Riviera were initially rejected by the Paris Academy as “scandalous” or “unfinished.” We can view the “exiled art” of the 1930s as a form of “internal migration” that many modern Berlin artists also experience today: it is a constant back-and-forth between home and the place of inspiration or refuge.
