The Place
The Citadelle Saint-Elme overlooks the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer and has served as a strategic landmark for centuries. Today it becomes a cultural venue for contemporary exchange.

The fortress blends robust defensive walls with elegant courtyards, offering immersive exhibition spaces, performance sites and evening programs.

Festival Statement

The "Jeu de Marseille" is a surrealist card game created in 1940–41 as a collaborative project by artists in exile in Marseille. Here are the details of its origins and significance: Place and context of creation: The game was designed at the Villa Air-Bel whilst the artists, led by André Breton, were awaiting their visas to flee the Nazi regime. In this atmosphere of uncertainty and threat, the Sunday gatherings at the villa served as a space for creative freedom and respite Artists involved: A total of eight artists contributed to the design, including prominent figures of Surrealism such as André Breton and Max Ernst.
