BERLIN x RIVIERA – International Art, Print & Publishing Festival

BERLIN X RIVIERA ART FESTIVAL

Berlin X Riviera

BERLIN x RIVIERA is an international platform for contemporary art, graphic design, artist books, and independent publishing culture. The festival brings together artists from Berlin, the Côte d’Azur, and the Mediterranean region, fostering a cultural dialogue between Germany and France. The first edition is planned to take place in the historic citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer and will bring together selected works from the fields of painting, graphic design, printmaking, artist books, illustration, and experimental forms of publication. The project is conceived as a curated cultural platform and promotes international exchange between artists, institutions, universities, and the public. In addition to exhibitions, the program includes artist talks, workshops, presentations, and events centered on print culture and independent publishing.

Statement

Impressionism was the first major “shock” of modernism. Many painters working on the Riviera were initially rejected by the Paris Academy as “scandalous” or “unfinished.” We can view the “exiled art” of the 1930s as a form of “internal migration” that many modern Berlin artists also experience today: it is a constant back-and-forth between home and the place of inspiration or refuge.
